If you’re using a non standard port (like 8080 instead of 80) paypal (at least the sandbox) won’t touch your server. When you try to test the IPN in their nice little sandbox testing tools you get a “http 1000 error, some crypto bullshit” (a 1000 error doesn’t even exist in the http specs).

So yeah, change your server back over 80 and that should (might) fix the problem.

PS. Fuck you, paypal

Here’s a .reg file to do it for your automatically in Windows Vista (probably xp and 7 as well)

kill-insert-key.reg

Just run this, restart your computer, and cross overwrite off your baggage list!

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/984141/internet-filter-gets-green-light
If this is all too frustrating and getting you down, have a listen to this, it inspires some hope:
http://www.abc.net.au/rn/counterpoint/stories/2009/2750893.htm

I’ll follow up with a response if I get one, PLEASE Australians, take action, don’t be angry on the side lines, if you don’t live close enough to egg Stephens house, please at least send him a letter, you can find his contact details here:
http://www.minister.dbcde.gov.au/contact

Dear Senator,

I do not need nor want your protection from ANYTHING, your internet censoring policy will promote even more complacency in the Australian individual towards personal responsibility.

I demand a reply justifying why you think fully grown adults need to be protected from information on the internet, why the current laws to address extreme illegal content (child pornography) aren’t sufficient, and why such a breach of personal liberties is worthwhile when your system is so easily circumvented. Do not send me your pre-written response.

Regards,
Dirk

I went to see DJ Pierre the other night at the Ambar, it was an AWESOME show! Anyway about halfway through his set I noticed something a bit odd and interesting, whenever the bass would come in the LED displays on the back of some of the clubs spotlights was looking a bit funny, I was completely sober, so my first thought was “Holy shit, 303 actually does make you hallucinate!” after a bit of pondering I think I’ve come up with an explanation.

Here’s what the light looked like with bass

How the LED display works:

We need to understand this to understand how the whole thing is happening. Now the most simplistic way to get an LED screen working would be to have a connection on the LED display part for each LED segment, then send power to that display segment to light it up. For our display here we have 4 numbers each with 7 segments, which would mean 28 pins (plus extra’s for gnd/other stuff). In reality this is not how it works, to reduce to the number of pins on the LED display it uses a technique called strobing.

Strobing:

Strobing is where not all of the LED segments are on at the same time, but time between when a segment is on and off is so short that our eyes perceive the segment as constant stream of light.

Now picture the LED display with 4 + 7 inputs, the first 4 determine which digit (of the 4 digits on the display) we are controlling the second 7 control each segment of that digit, have a play around with the flash file below to see what I’m talking about, remember in real life it’s all automated and the first 4 buttons are being pressed very quickly.

What It Looks Like:

<object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"
 id="fm_LEDDisplay2_833562497"

The Hallucination:

Ok now that we know how the LED thingo works lets think about this, the Ambar has an insane system, the kind of bass to make your teeth fall out, so the ground was shaking quite a bit where I was standing. Now if the LED display was being controlled by a PIC microchip (for example) using a 4mhz crystal as the timer and say each strobe takes about 4 clock cycles, and consider that audible bass frequencies are around the 20hz-100hz, let’s say the ground was shaking at 50hz, then we get about 20 strobes per floor shaking period. If we mark that out on a sine graph we can see where our eyeballs were at each strobe, this picture isn’t accurate I just whipped it up quickly in paint!

But now consider that if we played with the wavelength of the floor vibrations that we could get the situation where certain segments are on more when we’re in a certain stage of the floor vibration cycle, which explains the weird hallucination! It would be cool to make the floor vibrate at an exact frequency and make the LED’s warp exactly how you wanted them to but that’s defined by the music in the club, hence the freaky stretched out looking effect. Below is what it might look like with some synchronization with the music:

And so in conclusion say no to drugs and yes to bass!
